This project was based on layout design and typography. We were challenged to pick a word and research its many definitions. Our assignment was to then write about and design a spread for each definition. We were challenged to work with a limited colour palette, i.e. black, white, and one other colour.

I started by picking the word I wanted to write and design for. I then researched a few of the definitions and wrote about three of them. I then made the typographical layout, followed by adding the images and other design elements.

 

I chose the word thread because I was intrigued by the design possibilities it offered. I then spent time exploring different definitions of the word "thread" and the story I could create with them. I noticed that every definition I chose focused on connecting things, so I wrote the copy with that theme. Then I worked to find images I could use for the spreads and edited them to fit the challenge. I chose my singular colour by associating the colour read with connection and the "red string theory". I edited all of my photos, both found and taken, to match my limited colour palette. I finished by printing and hand-binding the zine using red thread.
